What You'll Do: Climate Change & Biodiversity Monitoring

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into the heart of the Amazon! As a volunteer, you'll be at the forefront of crucial biodiversity research. Your day might kick off with collecting and analyzing data from camera traps and acoustic recorders, tracking mammals, birds, and amphibians in their natural habitats.

Next, you’ll hit the trails on altitudinal transects, moving from the lush Amazonian Lowlands up to almost 3000m in the Cloud Forest, exploring how species adapt to climate change.

Insect enthusiasts, rejoice! You’ll collect and process malaise traps to monitor insect populations, and long-term volunteers can even climb trees to gather samples. Birdwatchers will love point counts of local birds, reptiles, and amphibians, using citizen science apps like iNaturalist and eBird to contribute to global research.

As the sun sets, get ready for a magical night with ultraviolet light-trapping for butterflies and moths. Finally, you'll help curate our entomological collections, ensuring every critter finds its perfect spot!

What You'll Do: Reforestation

Let’s bring the jungle back to life! Your mission is to combat invasive bamboo and restore the vibrant biodiversity of the Amazon. Under the guidance of our resident botanist, you’ll help construct a greenhouse to nurture native plant saplings, preparing for future reforestation efforts.

Each day, you'll survey the station’s vast property to identify target areas for bamboo management. Together, we’ll actively control, remove, and monitor those pesky bamboo patches, making way for a resurgence of native flora and fauna.

From packing and planting trees to ongoing care and maintenance of reforested areas, every action counts. This is more than just a project; it's a commitment to reviving the lush landscapes of the Station!

What You'll Do: Regenerative Agriculture

Farmers, unite! Join us in creating a self-sufficient food program that thrives in harmony with the jungle. You’ll dig into the dirt, cultivating a bounty of native crops like plantains, cacao, and sweet potatoes, all while learning about sustainable agriculture practices.

Help maintain our aquaculture system, harvesting native Paco fish and caring for our colony of stingless bees, all while ensuring the garden flourishes. With a blend of composting and soil regeneration, you’ll contribute to the station’s agroforestry systems.

And get ready for future expansions! Whether it’s preparing for chickens or fostering a medicinal garden, every day brings a new challenge and the chance to make a lasting impact on our ecosystem.

Get ready to capture the symphony of birdlife with our Bioacoustics program! Using cutting-edge acoustic recorders, you'll help map the chorus of over 600 bird species, honing your skills in bird vocalization and data analysis.

Hit the trails for thrilling bird surveys, where morning and afternoon adventures await. Document the incredible biodiversity using citizen science apps as you monitor nest box occupants and survey nocturnal wonders with UV light.

And don’t forget to share the magic! Collaborate with our resident photographer in the Science Communication program to craft captivating videos that highlight the beauty and importance of our avian residents.

Reviews

It was a unique experience filled with a lot of work and knowledge acquired. It’s a program that I would definitely recommend to every person who is interested and loves nature. It does not matter if you are a biologist, or an economist like me, what you are going to get out of it is life changing. It’s a program that gives you a bigger sense of reality and how anyone can imagine and help change what we have damaged previously.

Rodrigo

During my time at Manu, I was exposed to numerous activities and skills I had never been exposed to or had relatively little experience in. I learned to drive a tractor, collected camera trap and recorder data, worked in the field of agriculture (beekeeping, fish nursing/collection, replanting, etc), and got to work with many others in different areas of Neotropical ecology. I was also exposed to different cultures whether it be an indigenous community or talking with the many people who work at Manu. All activities gave me a well rounded experience and taught me so much. I wish I could have stayed longer! I’m very happy to have been a part of this program and help in any way I could. Thank you.
